Nintavur is predominantly a Muslim village situated in the East Coast of Sri Lanka 55 km to the South of Batticaloa and 22 km to the East of Ampara, in the Digamadulla Administrative District. The educational development of the village comes under the purview of the Kalmunai Regional Educational Administration.
The village derives its name from the Sinahalese word “Nindagama”, during the reign of the Kandyan King, who gifted agricultural land to the inhabitants of the village in reciprocation for the trust, allegiance, loyalty and hospitality demonstrated by them.
Nintavur, literally referred to as the ‘Granary of the East’ comprises an area of 4107 square meter in extent with approximately 6976 acres under paddy cultivation. Majority of the inhabitants rely on traditional farming or fishing which basically contribute towards the economic growth and development of the village. Overseas employment since the recent past is an additional boost to economy. The population of the village is around 25,000 as revealed by recently concluded census.
Thirteen schools, spread throughout the village, cater to the basic educational needs of the children. Dropouts from these primary and secondary centers of learning have the option to pursue vocation-oriented programs at the Regional Vocational Training Center located in the village, while the crème of the students enjoy the privilege of pursuing higher education at the Universities including the South Eastern University, 5 km away from the village.
Nintavur, with an elevation of 7.62 meters above seal level, and temperatures ranging between 25 C to 27 C experiences seasonal rains from October to January, flanked by the Indian Ocean in the East and environment friendly greenery West. The village with its serenity provides the peace, harmony and tranquility to the inhabitants which make them the most pleasant and hospitable.
